Education leaders worldwide are seeking to make learning more accessible and relevant, to spark their students’ desire to learn and prepare them for future learning in a fast changing, connected world. On January 13-15 2009, 20+ schools from around the world convened in London for the Innovative Schools Conference to learn from one another and from learning and education researchers. The conference is one of a series of in-person and online meetings–was organized by Microsoft’s Innovative Schools Program (ISP) in partnership with researchers from the Learning in Informal and Formal Environments (LIFE) Center. At the conference, LIFE researchers, Bransford and Penuel, gave keynote presentations on learning and innovation.

LIFE and PIL are collaborators on the Innovative Schools Program, the aim of which is to help school leaders make systemic change through innovations in teaching, learning and assessment, leadership, professional learning and community partnerships. LIFE contributes knowledge, current research findings and expertise to schools, and in turn, learns from them as they formulate and implement their new designs for schools.

The Innovative Schools Program is part of a larger Microsoft initiative called Partners in Learning that works with governments, ministries of education and other key stakeholders in more than 100 countries to offer a spectrum of education resources ”including tools, programs and practices” that help catalyze change and break down local barriers to learning and innovation.
